Acoustic Emission Leak Detection acoustic emission testing

Can leak flow be heard and distinguished from the surrounding process? Review feasibility, expected output and limitations with IAIS.

The inspection question

Can leak flow be heard and distinguished from the surrounding process?

Pressure vessels, piping, valves, tanks and other components where a pressure difference drives leakage.

This page describes a technically possible application. Final IAIS service availability, procedure, personnel and equipment are confirmed only after the asset-specific enquiry is reviewed.

How this application can work

Potential acoustic sources

Fluid or gas passing through an opening can generate detectable acoustic energy. The usable signal varies with medium, pressure difference, leak geometry, propagation path and sensor coupling.

Conditions required for a meaningful test

Identify the medium, pressures, operating state, expected leak size, accessible surface and competing flow noise. A method-specific demonstration may be needed before a detection claim.

What the client can receive

Localized acoustic activity associated with the defined test state, confidence and coverage limits, and a recommendation for confirmatory leak testing.

Limits and follow-up

Confirm the leak and quantify tightness with the contractually required method. AE signal intensity is not automatically a calibrated leak rate.

From enquiry to project scope

Send the asset drawing and material specification, operating and design data, previous inspection records, suspected mechanism, available access, proposed test window and applicable client or regulatory requirements. A feasibility review can then establish sensor coverage, loading or monitoring conditions, background-noise controls, procedure, evaluation criteria and the role of complementary inspection.

In the field

Acoustic emission testing in industrial environments

Sensor placement, test conditions and data acquisition are planned around the specific asset and inspection objective.

Discuss your inspection objective

Send the asset type, location, operating conditions and proposed loading or test window. We can review the information before defining a project-specific scope.
