Metallic Pressure Vessels acoustic emission testing
Can the vessel be screened for active sources during a controlled pressure or loading cycle? Review feasibility, expected output and limitations with IAIS.
The inspection question
Can the vessel be screened for active sources during a controlled pressure or loading cycle?
Reactors, separators, receivers, columns, autoclaves and other metallic pressure equipment.
This page describes a technically possible application. Final IAIS service availability, procedure, personnel and equipment are confirmed only after the asset-specific enquiry is reviewed.
How this application can work
Potential acoustic sources
Crack extension, local yielding, friction or leakage may produce acoustic events when sufficiently stimulated. AET monitors activity across an instrumented region rather than measuring the entire wall volumetrically.
Conditions required for a meaningful test
Review the vessel code, pressure history, medium, safe test pressure, ramp and hold sequence, connections, temperature, surface access and acoustic noise. A depressurized or unchanging asset may not stimulate the suspected damage.
What the client can receive
Time-correlated activity, channel and source-location plots where localization is valid, loading history, quality checks and prioritized areas for follow-up.
Limits and follow-up
Use targeted UT, PAUT, TOFD, surface examination or engineering assessment to characterize a localized area. AET cannot by itself size a crack or certify the whole vessel defect-free.
From enquiry to project scope
Send the asset drawing and material specification, operating and design data, previous inspection records, suspected mechanism, available access, proposed test window and applicable client or regulatory requirements. A feasibility review can then establish sensor coverage, loading or monitoring conditions, background-noise controls, procedure, evaluation criteria and the role of complementary inspection.

Acoustic emission testing in industrial environments
Sensor placement, test conditions and data acquisition are planned around the specific asset and inspection objective.

Discuss your inspection objective
Send the asset type, location, operating conditions and proposed loading or test window. We can review the information before defining a project-specific scope.
