Piping and Pressure Boundaries acoustic emission testing
Where is active acoustic behavior occurring in an operating or loaded pressure system? Review feasibility, expected output and limitations with IAIS.
The inspection question
Where is active acoustic behavior occurring in an operating or loaded pressure system?
Metallic piping, manifolds, fittings, pressure boundaries and selected connected components.
This page describes a technically possible application. Final IAIS service availability, procedure, personnel and equipment are confirmed only after the asset-specific enquiry is reviewed.
How this application can work
Potential acoustic sources
AE can monitor transient activity from active cracking, leaks or other mechanisms, subject to propagation and source discrimination. Pipe supports, valves and flow can also be strong signal sources.
Conditions required for a meaningful test
Review wall thickness, supports, coatings, insulation, process flow, accessible spans, operating transients and sensor spacing. Isolation and repeatable baseline conditions can be decisive.
What the client can receive
Event trends, zone or source estimates where supported, correlation with pressure or process conditions, and a documented limitations statement.
Limits and follow-up
Use guided-wave UT, local UT/PAUT, visual or leak methods according to the suspected mechanism. Monitoring cannot replace mandated weld or corrosion surveys.
From enquiry to project scope
Send the asset drawing and material specification, operating and design data, previous inspection records, suspected mechanism, available access, proposed test window and applicable client or regulatory requirements. A feasibility review can then establish sensor coverage, loading or monitoring conditions, background-noise controls, procedure, evaluation criteria and the role of complementary inspection.

Discuss your inspection objective
Send the asset type, location, operating conditions and proposed loading or test window. We can review the information before defining a project-specific scope.
