Pressure Tests and Commissioning acoustic emission testing

Is unexpected acoustic activity occurring while a new or repaired pressure boundary is loaded? Review feasibility, expected output and limitations with IAIS.

The inspection question

Is unexpected acoustic activity occurring while a new or repaired pressure boundary is loaded?

Fabricated vessels, repaired pressure equipment, test spools and pressure-retaining assemblies.

This page describes a technically possible application. Final IAIS service availability, procedure, personnel and equipment are confirmed only after the asset-specific enquiry is reviewed.

How this application can work

Potential acoustic sources

A controlled test may stimulate active material or joint-related sources while recording their relation to pressure steps. The pressure test itself remains governed by its own code and approved procedure.

Conditions required for a meaningful test

Coordinate instrumentation with the test authority. Confirm test medium, hold periods, pressurization rate, exclusions, personnel safety and whether activity can be distinguished from supports, valves and flow.

What the client can receive

An event record linked to the test sequence and identified areas for investigation, with clear statements of observed conditions and exclusions.

Limits and follow-up

Investigate relevant activity through direct inspection and the governing test acceptance process. AE monitoring is not automatic proof-test acceptance.

From enquiry to project scope

Send the asset drawing and material specification, operating and design data, previous inspection records, suspected mechanism, available access, proposed test window and applicable client or regulatory requirements. A feasibility review can then establish sensor coverage, loading or monitoring conditions, background-noise controls, procedure, evaluation criteria and the role of complementary inspection.

Relevant technical reference

ASTM E569/E569M; ISO 24367:2023. View publisher information. The current edition and its exact scope must be checked before a project procedure is agreed.

In the field

Acoustic emission testing in industrial environments

Sensor placement, test conditions and data acquisition are planned around the specific asset and inspection objective.

Discuss your inspection objective

Send the asset type, location, operating conditions and proposed loading or test window. We can review the information before defining a project-specific scope.
